Follow this checklist to identify the real source of high memory usage and apply fixes that you can verify with concrete metrics.
1. Capture a Baseline
Open Task Manager → Performance → Memory and note In use, Available, and Committed. Then open Resource Monitor → Memory and note Hard Faults/sec. These numbers are your baseline to compare against after you make changes.
2. Identify the Top Memory Consumers
In Task Manager, sort by Memory and note the top 3 processes. For each, determine whether you can close it, restart it, or replace it with a lighter alternative (e.g., use a leaner browser).
3. Reduce Startup and Background Load
Open Task Manager → Startup and disable items you don’t need. Then open Settings → Privacy → Background apps and restrict apps that don’t need to run all the time. This reduces memory usage after boot.
4. Adjust Virtual Memory (Page File)
Open System → About → Advanced system settings → Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory → Change. Either let Windows manage it, or set a custom size (initial 1.5× RAM, max 3× RAM). Don’t set it too low or disable it.
5. Verify the Improvement
Repeat your baseline measurements after a reboot. If In use memory is lower and Hard Faults/sec is reduced, your changes worked. If not, repeat the process with the next biggest memory consumer.
