Follow this checklist to identify the source of high CPU usage and apply targeted fixes that make your system feel faster immediately.
1. Capture a Baseline
Open Task Manager and record the idle CPU percentage (with no heavy apps open). Then open Performance Monitor (Win+R → perfmon) and create a quick data collector set for Processor% Processor Time to log for 5 minutes. This gives you a baseline to compare against after you make changes.
2. Identify the Top CPU Consumers
In Task Manager, sort by CPU and note the top 3 processes over a 1–2 minute window. If the top process is a browser, close tabs or use an ad blocker. If it is an updater, schedule it for later. Write down the process names before changing anything.
3. Apply One Change at a Time
Pick one high-CPU process and apply a fix:
- For apps: check for updates or reinstall.
- For services: set them to Manual in services.msc.
- For startup programs: disable them in Task Manager → Startup.
After making the change, reboot and compare CPU usage to your baseline.

4. Check Windows Update and Drivers
Open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and ensure updates are installed. If you saw high CPU usage from the system process, it may be alive due to a failing driver. Update GPU and chipset drivers from the manufacturer's site, not just Windows Update.
5. Verify Improvements
Re-run your Performance Monitor log for 5 minutes and compare the CPU percentage to your baseline. If usage is lower, you solved the issue. If not, repeat the process with the next biggest CPU consumer.
