Reduce RAM Usage on Windows: Step-by-Step Checklist

A practical checklist to reduce RAM usage on Windows with measured results and safe rollback.

December 16, 20258 min read

Use this checklist to identify what’s consuming RAM, apply fixes in a controlled way, and verify that your system is using memory efficiently.

1. Record Current RAM Usage

Open Task Manager → Performance → Memory and note the values for In use, Available, and Committed. Then open Resource Monitor → Memory and note Hard Faults/sec. This is your starting point for comparison.

2. Spot the Top Memory Consumers

In Task Manager, sort processes by Memory. Identify the top 3 consumers and decide whether you can close, restart, or replace them with lighter alternatives.
If a process grows over time, it may be leaking memory; restart it and see if usage drops.

3. Trim Browser and Background App Usage

Close unused browser tabs and disable unnecessary extensions. For background apps, open Settings → Privacy → Background apps and restrict apps that don’t need to stay running.
If you use virtual machines, shut them down when not needed.

4. Tune Virtual Memory

Open System → About → Advanced system settings → Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory → Change. Either let Windows manage it, or set a custom size (initial 1.5× RAM, maximum 3× RAM). Avoid setting it too small or disabling it entirely.

5. Verify the Improvement

Repeat your initial measurements: Task Manager memory usage and Resource Monitor hard faults. If RAM usage is lower and hard faults are reduced, the changes worked. If not, revisit the top memory consumers and try a different fix.
