Reduce RAM Usage on Windows: Quick Fixes That Actually Work

Four fast tweaks that reduce memory usage and keep Windows feeling snappy.

Need immediate relief from high RAM usage? These quick fixes are easy to apply and deliver visible improvements right away.

Fix #1 (2 minutes): Restart the Biggest Memory Hog

Open Task Manager, sort by Memory, and restart the top consumer (right-click → End task). Most high-RAM apps (browsers, IDEs, VMs) are safe to restart and usually reclaim memory immediately.

Fix #2 (3 minutes): Close Tabs and Extensions

In your browser, close unused tabs and disable extensions you don’t need. Each tab and extension can hold hundreds of megabytes of RAM, so this often has the biggest impact.

Fix #3 (4 minutes): Reduce Startup Apps

Open Task Manager → Startup and disable items you don’t need (Spotify, OneDrive if you don’t use it, update checkers). This keeps RAM free after boot.

Fix #4 (5 minutes): Clear the Microsoft Store Cache

Press Win+R, type wsreset.exe, and hit Enter. This clears the Store cache and can reduce memory usage by stopping stuck background tasks related to app updates.

Fix #5 (5 minutes): Reduce Visual Effects

Open System → Advanced system settings → Performance Settings and choose Adjust for best performance or disable only the effects you don’t care about. This reduces memory used by graphical effects and speeds up rendering.
