Windows 10 Background Apps: Quick Fixes That Actually Work

Four quick tweaks you can apply in minutes to reduce background app overhead and restore responsiveness on Windows 10.

Want results fast? These four quick tweaks will cut background app noise on Windows 10 without breaking notifications, sync, or security features.

Fix #1 (2 minutes): Turn Off Background Apps Globally

Open Settings → Privacy → Background apps and toggle Let apps run in the background to Off. This immediately stops all UWP apps from doing background work. If you need an app to run in the background (Mail, Calendar), re-enable it in the list below.

Fix #2 (3 minutes): Disable High-Impact Startup Items

Open Task Manager → Startup, sort by Startup impact, and disable apps you don’t need right after logging in (Steam, Dropbox, Adobe Updater, Spotify). Reboot and observe a faster login experience.

Fix #3 (4 minutes): Stop OneDrive from Syncing Everything

Right-click the OneDrive icon in your system tray and choose Settings → Account → Choose folders. Uncheck large folders (Videos, Pictures) or switch to Files On-Demand so only placeholders sync locally. This dramatically reduces disk and network activity.

Fix #4 (5 minutes): Use Task Scheduler to Stop Frequent Tasks

Open Task Scheduler (Win+R → taskschd.msc) and look under Task Scheduler Library → Microsoft → Windows. Disable or re-schedule tasks that run too often (e.g., Customer Experience Improvement Program, Compatibility Appraiser). Only disable tasks for apps you recognize and do not need running all the time.

Fix #5 (5 minutes): Trim Scheduled Maintenance

Go to Control Panel → Security and Maintenance → Maintenance and click Change maintenance settings. Set it to run at a time when you are not using the PC (like 3 AM) so maintenance tasks do not interrupt your work.
