Use this checklist to update drivers one at a time, validate stability, and avoid the common headaches of bad driver updates.
1. Record Your Current Driver Versions
Open Device Manager, expand each key category (Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers), and note the driver version and date for critical devices. This gives you a rollback reference if anything goes wrong.
2. Create a Restore Point
Search for Create a restore point, open System Properties, and create a new restore point. This lets you undo the entire update batch if something breaks.
3. Update One Driver at a Time
Start with the most impactful drivers: GPU, chipset, and network. Download drivers from the vendor (Intel, NVIDIA, AMD, Realtek) and install them one at a time. Reboot after each install and verify the issue you were chasing is resolved.
4. Verify Stability After Each Update
After each driver install, test the scenario that was problematic (e.g., gaming, video playback, Wi-Fi). If you see crashes, use Device Manager → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver to revert.
5. Keep a Driver Update Log
Log the date, component (GPU, NIC, audio), driver version, and whether the update fixed the issue or introduced new behavior. This makes it easy to track what works and what doesn’t over time.
