Follow this checklist to make your hard drive run smoother and avoid common slowdowns without risky tweaks.
1. Confirm Your Drive Type
Open Task Manager → Performance and select the disk. If it shows "Hard disk", you’re on an HDD. If it shows "Solid state drive", follow the SSD optimization guide instead.
Knowing the drive type prevents you from running the wrong maintenance tools.

2. Run Disk Cleanup
Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) and select the drive. Click Clean up system files to remove Windows Update leftovers and old temporary files.
This can free several gigabytes and reduce the number of files Windows needs to manage.

3. Optimize (Defragment) the Drive
Open Defragment and Optimize Drives and select your HDD. Click Optimize and wait for it to finish. If fragmentation is low (<10%), you can skip frequent runs; if it’s high, run it now and revisit monthly.
4. Move Heavy Write Activity Off the HDD
Move large folders (Downloads, Videos) to another drive if possible. For laptops with only one drive, consider moving browser caches or working project folders to an external drive or network location.
5. Monitor Drive Health
Use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo to check SMART values. Pay attention to Reallocated Sector Count, Current Pending Sector Count, and Uncorrectable Sector Count. Plan to replace the drive if any of these start climbing.
