Follow this checklist to optimize your SSD for speed and longevity with safe, reversible changes that are easy to verify.
1. Verify TRIM is Enabled
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:
slettefsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
If the output is 0, TRIM is enabled. If it is 1, enable it with fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0. TRIM is critical for SSD performance and lifespan.

2. Check SSD Health
Use CrystalDiskInfo or the vendor's SSD utility to check SMART status. Look specifically at Media Wearout Indicator, Total Host Writes, and Reallocated Sector Count. If the drive is near end-of-life, plan a replacement before it fails.
3. Confirm Windows Recognizes the Drive as SSD
Open Defragment and Optimize Drives and confirm the drive is listed as an SSD (it will say "Solid state drive"). If it shows as HDD, Windows may run unnecessary defrag tasks.
4. Reduce Unnecessary Write Activity
Move large, write-heavy folders off the SSD (e.g., Downloads, Videos) by right-clicking the folder (e.g., Documents) → Properties → Location → Move. Also disable aggressive browser caching and log file verbosity for apps you use often.
5. Verify Performance
Run CrystalDiskMark (or another benchmark) before and after your changes to verify improvements. A healthy SSD should deliver consistent read/write speeds and low latency.
